The Nigerian Ports Authourity (NPA) last Friday cleared the air over its agreement with private terminal operators, saying it has had cause to question the performance of only two of its concessionaires since 2006 when the ports were concessioned to private operators
Specifically, the NPA said it “had cause to terminate the agreement of GreenLeigh Company, which was a terminal operator in KoKo Port, for want of performance”.
A statement sent to Shipping Position Daily last Friday indicated that, “additionally, a terminal operator in the eastern Port has also been given notice of termination for want of performance in the development plan”.
The statement which was signed by Mr Isah Suwaid; Asst. General Manager, Public Affairs at NPA Western Ports in Apapa said that it was not correct to say that NPA had terminated lease agreements with terminal operators
“These cases of termination of lease agreements of defaulting terminal operators were in the past and in furtherance with the Authority’s responsibility of ensuring compliance to development plan by the terminal operators in line with the lease agreement”.
The statement was a reaction to a story that was published in Shipping Position Daily of last Friday, in which NPA Assistant General Manager (AGM), Corporate and Strategic Planning, Western Ports, Mr. Innocent Gamboro Umar was quoted to have said at an event in Lagos last Thursday that, “the agency has terminated the lease agreement it signed in 2006 with some terminal operators”.
Mr. Gamboro Umar represented the Managing Director, Hadiza Bala Usman at the event which was out together by the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN).
