The Western Marine Command (WMC) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 30 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) commonly known as petrol concealed in large bags.
The Customs Area Controller in charge of the command, Comptroller Olugboyega Peters who said this last week at the command, also disclosed that the items were seized on the waterways based on intelligence.
He also said that the smugglers on sighting the operatives jumped into the water.
“The criminals concealed the petrol in bags, in order to escape security checks. On sighting our operatives, they jumped into the water"
“We seized 30 jerrycans, and each contains about 150 litres of petrol. Imagine the level of economic sabotage”
Stressing further, Comptroller Peters said, “These smugglers thought since government made a pronouncement on lock-down due to coronavirus pandemic that they can carry out their naferious activities unhindered”
According to him, “these economic saboteurs are adamant. We have sensitised the people enough, even up to traditional rulers. We shall leave no stone unturned in enforcing the law.”
The Western Marine Command boss further revealed that his team is on 24 hours’ patrol surveillance on waterways to curb illicit trade.
