The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service yesterday said its personnel have seized different goods with Duty Paid Value (DPV) in excess of N15million.
Speaking during the press briefing in Lagos, the Controller Command; Comptroller Serkin Kebbi disclosed that the goods were intercepted at different locations in Lagos and Ogun states.
The items according to him included, bales of second hand clothing, small bales of second hand clothing,sacks of bags worth about N7Million.
Also, seized were eight sacks of children rubber sandals with DPV of N240,000.
He also said that, 477cartons of frozen chicken with DPV of N2,862,000.00 and 400 bags of foreign parboiled rice with DPV of N4,949,876,4 were also intercepted.
According to him, the bales of clothing, rubber sandals and frozen chicken were intercepted at Iluefe-Ojo Alaba by the joint team of the commands last week, while the foreign parboiled bags of rice were seized at Tungeji/ Ijofin creek along Nigeria/Benin axis yesterday.
Disclosing how the seizures were made, Comptroller Serkin said: "We had information two days before that day that they were on the waters coming. So we laid ambush, when they came we allowed them to off-load, it was after they off-loaded that our officers swooped on them and they ran into the water, so we used vehicle to evacuate them" he said.
Speaking further, the command’s boss said, “I don’t have any other job here than to arrest smuggled goods because that's what I have been doing since I assumed duties. We have to do it; that is our job, to help the economy of the country and help our farmers too to go back to the farm because these things are not good for our health. The second hand clothing have been banned and they are under absolute prohibition list, because of the health hazards they cause to the citizens".
