The Lagos State Government says it has trained 90 women selected from various areas of the state on recycling of water hyacinth cleared from waterways in the state to produce marketable items.
Commissioner for Transportation Lagos State; Mr Ladi Lawanson stated this last week at the opening of the Lagos International Maritime Week.
He said the empowerment programme is carried out by the state in conjunction with Mitimeth, a non-governmental organization.
The 90 women according to him have been trained on how to use water hyacinth cleared from Lagos waterways to produce marketable items like key holders, mats, bags and among others.
"In keeping with this administration’s mantra of running an all-inclusive administration, and in conjunction with Mitimeth, a non-governmental organization, we have embarked on the training of 90 women in recycling of the water hyacinth cleared from our waterways to produce marketable items like key holders, mats, bags and so on.
"This is in addition to partnering with the Lagos Traffic Radio to sensitise the public on passenger safety measures and guidelines for ferry operations, just as regular safety awareness campaigns on inland waterways had regularly at our eight state-owned jetties. ”
"Government alone cannot do it; it is therefore our joint responsibility to make the State work for all.
I therefore urge all and sundry to please continue to play our parts to keep the State in the lead"
Lawanson noted that based on the Lagos State Government concern and commitment to the development of all modes of transportation, the state government, in 2008, established the Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA and saddled it with the responsibility to regulate, develop and manage all aspects of the waterways.
He said, "This was with a view to ensure growth in the modal share of ferry services within an integrated public transport system by growing the modal share of the waterways network especially through private sector participation".
