Niger Government is set to send 150 youths to Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko in Delta and Nigeria Maritime Academy, Oron, Akwa Ibom for training.
Rep. Umar Bago (APC Niger) disclosed this at a news conference in Minna recently.
Bago, the Chairman, House Committee on Maritime Education, Safety and Administration, said that the training, which was in collaboration with key stakeholders, was a move to educate youths from the state on maritime issues before the Baro Port in Niger start operations.
He added that providing basic training would enable the youths to acquire skills that would qualify them for jobs in the sub-sector.
The lawmaker noted that the opportunities in the marine sub-sector were more than that of oil sector, which hitherto became the economic mainstay of the country.
He lauded Federal Government for establishing Baro Port, adding that when it became operational, the port would further complement others in driving the economy of the country.
He also lauded the decision of Federal Government to link Minna to Abuja with rail from Baro Port, adding that with the establishment of dry ports by Shippers Council, the sub-sector would soon come alive.
He said the gesture was bound to mitigate the current pressure on the country’s highways and reduce accidents and consequent loss of lives on the roads.
