Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has said that the commencement of academic activities at the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, would enhance the existing peace in the Niger Delta.
Okowa said this when the Chairman of the university’s Governing Council; Chief Timipre Sylva and members paid him a courtesy visit in Asaba last week.
He said the commencement of activities in the university, located in Okerenkoko, a riverine community in Warri South Local Government Area of the state, would also attract sustainable development to the area.
The governor said, he was “glad that academic activities have commenced in the university. We thank God for the successful take off of the maritime university.
“This will consolidate on the existing peace in the Niger Delta and attract sustainable development to the area.”
“We are aware that the terrain is very difficult for the execution of projects and this is what the governing council will experience in defending its budget.
“The cost of executing projects in that area triples what it takes to execute similar projects in the upland.”
Okowa promised that his administration would continue to assist as much as it could in developing the university.
“Maritime University is the first of its kind in Nigeria; we hope you, the governing council, will develop it to internationally acceptable standard,” he added.
The governor congratulated Sylva and the members of the governing council on their appointments.
Earlier, the former governor of Bayelsa said more than 300 students were currently studying in the institution.
Sylva noted that the governing council was inaugurated on March 22, and commended Okowa’s administration for its contributions towards the development of the university.
