The Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has promised to support the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron by ensuring the timely release of funds.
Peterside said before the end of October, MAN will get a minimum of two quarters disbursement of funds.
Speaking in Oron during a visit to the academy recently, he decried the high failure rate of cadets from the academy compared to other institutions in the industry in the country and advised that class attendance should be made a priority.
He said, “The fortune of the maritime industry in Nigeria is directly related to the fortune or performance of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron because it grooms personnel for the industry and so, if we expect the industry to be top range, the quality of our personnel must be top range.”
The Rector of MAN, Commodore Duja Effedua (rtd), said his administration would reduce the number of cadets admitted from 2,000 to 200 to meet the regulated standard, noting that the idea was to effectively train the cadets within the available facilities.
He said funding to the academy was irregular and that staff members needed reorientation as 80 per cent of the academy’s problem lay within the academy.
He revealed that the institution had a bloated staff strength, and that 80 per cent of the staff were non-academic
