The Nigerian Association of Master Mariners (NAMM) has announced that the first female master mariner in Nigeria has emerged and she is an ex-cadet at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) in Oron Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking at an industry event in Lagos recently, Chairman Technical Committee of NAMM, Capt Adewale Ishola said the female master mariner was among those mentored by the association as well as other maritime stakeholders.
Capt Ishola however refused to give the name of the said mariner. He said that the lady obtained her master mariner from the United Kingdom.
Already, he said she has been successfully employed by Shell Petroleum Company in Nigeria and that she was married to a marine engineer who understands the seafaring profession and its challenges.
"Part of the mentoring and sponsoring we have been giving to cadets has yielded a lady master mariner.
I am a proud man today, together with my colleagues who mentored this lady, she obtained her master mariner from the United Kingdom, she is the first of her kind in Nigeria"
"She is outside the country right now with her family, she is married to a marine engineer who understands the sea, she had wonderful support from her husband and this is why she is where she is today"
"She is also engaged and employed by Shell Petroleum in Nigeria here.
These are the ex-cadets from Oron that was sponsored at that time”, he said
