Even as the tripartite workshop being put together by the southwest offices of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency(NIMASA), Nigerian Shippers Council(NSC) and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council(NEPC) comes up tomorrow, organizers of the event have disclosed that issues bordering on proper documentation for exports will top the agenda at the workshop.
The chairman, organizing committee of the event, Mr. Olayemi Abass, disclosed this in a chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week.
He also reiterated that at the workshop, issues bordering on ensuring that the exports are compliant with rules of engagement, as well as international standard for exports will also be properly discussed, he added that the workshop intends to educate the public on the need to diversify the nation’s economy.
“Of course you know Shippers Council is involved in cargo protection, NEPC is involved in the export of goods and of course the standard of goods to be exported. So at this workshop we will be talking about issues that border on making sure that the exports are compliant with the rules of engagement, international standard for exports, right from packaging, processing because we add value to the exports, containerization, documentation for exports and actual shipment. The situation behind the workshop as we had always told the public was the fact that we have always been talking about diversifying the Nigerian economy and of course diversification means non- oil exports so that oil doesn’t dominate our revenue”.
“The workshop is coming at this period because the raining season is gone, the farmers are a bit free to move around and strategize towards the next harvest and raining season. So we feel this is the right time to talk to everyone as the year is coming to an end and to also prepare for a new year and a new farming and agricultural season so that we could strategize on how to grow the economy. And also get the shipping leg in, because the goods are there how do we bring them from the hinterland to the ports, how do we get the cargo from the ports of Nigeria to the destination abroad, how do we finance and fund the sector”, he explained.
