The Director General of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, Barrister Obiageli Obi, has called for more collaboration between Nigerian seafarers and their counterparts from other parts of the world to ensure that there is adequate sea time for cadets.
Barrister Obi who spoke exclusively to Shipping Position Daily in Lagos recently, also applauded the bill that was passed by the National Assembly for the upgrading of MAN Oron into federal maritime university describing the move as a welcome development.
Speaking during the chat, she urged the federal government not to forget that what the people need most is sea time.
She also maintained that a lot of the cadets have acquired the theoretical aspect of their learning and need the practical side which is very important.
She said that the government should understand that maritime is the future of this country and as a result, attention should be paid to the sector.
According to her, "the upgrading of MAN Oron to a federal maritime university is a good development. They should also understand that what the people need is sea time, they should not forget that. A lot of them have acquired the knowledge all they need is practical. They should collaborate with other institutions all over the world to give our people sea time. So as the school is now upgraded, they should endeavour to provide sea time for our seafarers. We should understand that maritime is the future of our country".
