The Provost, Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT), Dr Abiodun Yussuf, on Friday urged the matriculating students not to engage in cultism and related vices.
Yussuf gave this advice at the College’s 2018/2019 Matriculation ceremony in Lagos.
According to him, the students should know that they are at the College to study and be useful to themselves and society at large.
“This ceremony starts the formal admission of students and is undertaken as an important aspect of academic programmes in all institutions of learning all over the world.
‘“You are all expected to stay out of trouble, avoid all undesirable behavior , clubs and gangs.
“Cultism is totally abhorred in this community.
“Any student caught engaging in cultism and associated groups will be decisively dealt with, in accordance with the rules.
“A very strong Students Disciplinary Committee is in place to ensure that students behave properly, to be able to graduate within their course periods,’’ he said.
Yussuf said that the Students’ Handbook given to the students during the orientation was a guide for their stay in the college community.
Alhaji Abdulmalik Usman, Chairman, Governing Board, Nigerian Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) and College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, said the students were now bonafide students of the college.
He said that they should utilise the opportunity of the world-class facilities and experienced manpower at the college to develop their careers.
Usman said that the governing body was there to ensure a positive and productive interface between major stakeholders.
He said that they were there also to ensure success in Government’s Agricultural Policies for National Development.
The Chairman said the College had trained many Maritime and Fisheries experts who were blazing high, achieving feats and contributing their quotas to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
480 students were admitted into the various courses offered by the College for the 2018/2019 academic year.
