The Tin Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has urged all freight forwarders operating at the port as well as other stakeholders to take advantage of the state of the art ICT facility at the command by coming forward to be trained by customs on key trade procedures.
Addressing forwarders at the inauguration of the Tin Can Island Chapter executives of the International Freight Forwarders Association (IFFA) at the Tin Can Island Port last week, Customs Area Controller of Tin Can Customs, Mr. Bashir Yussuf noted that the reason why some freight forwarders are not compliant with trade procedures is because they are not trained and they lack information.
Represented by Deputy Controller in charge of enforcement, Mr. Dera Nnadi, the Comptroller noted that the training facility at the command has been deployed to train customs officers and sections of stakeholders in the sector including the media. He urged freight forwarders and clearing agents to take advantage of the facility and become abreast of latest procedures in World Customs Organisation (WCO) and World Trade Organization (WTO)
Speaking, he said “We encourage those who are not yet complying with our processes to take advantage of all the facilities and tools we have put in place to comply. We have noticed that sometimes, the challenges of the industry is as a result of people being uninformed”
“As a result of that, we have established a training centre at the CPC which has been made available to both freight forwarders and every industry operator to come and take advantage of. Those facilities are at your disposal, you can always come there and we would train you for free”
“Let us be mindful of the fact that the country needs your support in achieving national security, we don’t expect you to bear arms in fighting for security, but we expect that through your relevant contribution and supply of information and pay your relevant duties, by so doing you are contributing to national security” he said.
