The Tin Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has kicked-off a training programme for about 120 of its officers in readiness for the migration of the customs from its Nigeria Integrated Customs Information System (NCIS 1) to NCIS 2.
NICIS was created to ensure trade facilitation in Nigeria especially between customs, importers, exporters, clearing agents and all other government agencies. The system is powered by Web Fontaine.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily at the command last week, it's Public Relations Officer, Uche Ejesieme said the programme is expected to run for three weeks and it is targeted at senior officers on the rank of Assistant Superintendent to Deputy Comptrollers, with particular reference to examination officers, releasing officers and the terminal heads.
He said that already the first batch of 50 officers have been trained, while officers from the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal are also participating in the programme.
Ejesieme noted that the NICIS is a trade facilitation tool and an upgrade of the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) which allows businesses to be transacted electronically.
The customs image maker said, "the training is for three weeks and it is designed to refresh the officers on what they already know. Don't forget that we started from ASYCUDA++ to NCIS 1 and now we are migrating to NCIS 2. We want to give them so preparatory lessons before we fully migrate to NCIS 2"
"The first batch is not less than 50 officers, this started last week.
We are taking them on various courses including introduction to ASYCUDA++, NCIS transaction bill"
"Training and retraining is one of the cardinal aims of the Comptroller General of Customs and the CAC here is also particular about training. Every week here we organise one form of training or the other to ensure that our officers are busy in regards to 21st century customs operations"
"The Area Controller requested for resource persons from the headquarters and the CGC graciously approved".
