A maritime expert and the former President of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF); Chief Eugene Nweke, has applauded the National Assembly for passing the bill for the upgrading of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron, into a maritime university.
Eugene in an exclusive chat with Shipping Position Daily last week week, described the move as a welcome development which will give the nation's maritime industry the opportunity for international collaboration with other seafarers around the world to ensure that Nigerian seafarers are given adequate sea time.
It will be recalled that the Senate recently passed a bill for the upgrading of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron to a federal maritime university.
Speaking during the chat, Nweke blamed the government for what he called nonchalant attitude, saying it caused the country to concede the Regional Maritime University to Ghana which is supposed to be in Nigeria.
According to him, the government should upgrade the already existing university into a maritime university instead of building new ones.
"To me, the action by the National Assembly is a welcomed development. If not because of the laxity of the government, we are not supposed to concede the regional university to Ghana. MAN, Oron is even supposed to be a regional university after 10 years of existence. The upgrading will enable the nation's maritime industry to have international collaboration to secure sea time for our seafarers. So the National Assembly is on good course", he concluded.
