The bills seek to address personnel's safety at sea and standard of training for cadets and seafarers respectively.
This was disclosed by the Rector of the foremost maritime school, Dr. Joshua Okpo on Sunday during a parley with journalists in Lagos.

The proposed bills, namely, domestication of all International Maritime Organisation (IMO) conventions including the Standard of Training and Watchkeeping Certification (STCW) which was amended in 2010 and to upgrade Safety Of Lives At Sea (SOLAS)
Okpo said that the two maritime conventions will be domesticated into Nigerian local laws through a draft bill, which he said will sail through the Federal Ministry of Transport down to the presidency as an executive bill.
"We are going to articulate two bills. The first one is the domestication of all IMO relevant conventions namely the STCW as amended in 2010"
"We are going to promoted SOLAS Safety At Sea and those two conventions and there amended will be domesticated into our local laws through a draft bill that will sail through the Ministry of Transport ,and president as executive bills",Okpo added.
The Rector also stated that experts are putting finishing touches to the bills adding that if it sails through ,it will enable the academy to migrate into a new phase on maritime academies syllabus standard internationally.
Okpo added that the development maritime academy syllabus will bring about exploration in the maritime domain pointing out that it is critical for the specialised school not to be dragged backward.
He noted that developing a syllabus at this time is aimed to impact on the country , economy and for the future generation.
According to him the SOLAS bill is expected to have the component which include Certificate , Diploma, Degree and Higher Degrees saying that the school currently run diploma in maritime studies and marine engineering.
