The Ports and Terminal Management Academy of Nigeria (POTEMAN) has appealed to the newly- appointed Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Ms Hadiza Bala-Usman to concentrate on sustainable capacity building programme for workers of the agency.
The maritime training institution also commended the Federal Government for the appointment of the new NPA boss and her team, saying that training of staff is key, considering her age.
Registrar of the academy, Dr. Babatunde Samuel stated in Lagos last week that as a young and dynamic female, there is the need for constant training of officers in the agency in all ramifications, adding that NPA as a parastatal of government needs capable hands that can deliver.
Babatunde stressed the need for workers’ training and re-training , pointing out that such programmes must be continuous for nation building.
According to him, the NPA is a specialised agency under the Transportation Ministry and workers must be trained in areas that suit their respective educational background and qualifications.
He stated that key departments, like administration, operations, engineering and public affairs need to be re-organised academically through specialised training programme to suit port and terminal activities.
The Registrar added that, "my piece of advice to the new MD of NPA is for her to focus on capacity building and capacity sustainability".
He also urged the new MD to work closely with the subordinates to find out areas where there might be challenges associated with the job, then source for avenue through which such officer can improve academically; based on the job training.
"We have a number of deficiencies in NPA today; especially in terms of quick response to either enquiry or letters forwarded to the NPA"
"Sometimes the usual Nigeria method is said to be the problem but it is not out of place to say that some people do not know what to do when they get such correspondence"
He said such attitude are not common in the private or more civilised sector, calling on Hadiza Usman Bala to focus on how to empower the workers academically.
