The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, Delta, last Friday matriculated 1,896 students for the 2018/2019 academic session.
The Principal of the institute, Prof. Sunny Iyuke, said at the combined matriculation ceremony in Effurun that the number comprised full time and School of Industrial Continuing Education students.
Iyuke said about 2,800 candidates applied for admission to pursue different careers in the Higher National Diploma (HND), National Diploma (ND) and Certificate programmes during the session.
The principal who administered the institution’s oat on the students said the students fulfilled the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the PTI internal requirements.
He said, “Out of this number, 1,896 candidates were qualified for admission by the standards of the JAMB as well as the PTI where applicable.
“I urged you to be creative, innovative, resourceful, focused and hardworking to justify the confidence reposed in you bearing in mind that matriculation is not just a fanfare but a serious responsibility.”
Iyuke said that PTI was vigorously pursuing a digitisation project in line with the global trend in Information Communication Technology (ICT).
He also said that the institution was collaborating with the University of Port Harcourt to run post-HND programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) and Master’s in Engineering.
The principal said that the initiative commenced in 2018.
“PTI, for 47 years running, has been the hub for petroleum field expertise with reputation for providing high quality technical education in petroleum disciplines for the oil and gas sector.
“Plans are underway to re-evaluate, add value and dignity to the institute’s programmes.
“In the nearest future PTI will be awarding Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) to its graduates as against the present HND.
“The proposal will be presented to the PTI Governing Council and the National University Commission soon for consideration,” he said.
While expressing management’s deep commitment to providing conducive learning environment, Iyuke urged the students to shun social vices such as cultism, stealing, examination misconduct and drug peddling.
“If there is any cause for complaint, please channel them through the approved channel of communication. Management will address all genuine complaints within the institution’s rules and regulations,” he said.
Iyuke urged the students to maintain high standard of discipine and study hard to promote the image of the institution wherever they might find themselves.
One of the matriculating students, Miss Eseoghene David, said she would study hard to justify the confidence reposed in her by the parents.
