The Shipowners Association of Nigeria (SOAN) has said that it is partnering multinational ship building company; Nigerdock plc on how to create boat building experience for cadets of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) in Oron, Akwa Ibom State.
President of SOAN; Engineer Greg Ogbeifun who disclosed this at the occasion of the inauguration of the executive council of the association in Lagos last week assured that the shipowners are already discussing with Nigerdock as well as other ship repair yards in the country to provide affordable and quick ship repair services for its members.
He noted that the initiative would further provide industrial training opportunities for boatbuilding technology cadets from MAN Oron.
Ogbeifun assured that the association would work closely with the committee set up by the government to restructure and reposition MAN Oron to ensure that the academy emerge as a global institution where industry players can comfortably send their cadets and other personnel for training.
He added that another way the association intends to focus on is the on-going development of sea time training opportunities for Nigerian cadets under the auspices of the SOAN cadetship sea time training scheme being developed by the association.
Ogbeifun said, “we have already started discussing with Nigerdock and other shipbuilding and ship repair yard in the country to provide affordable, quick and quality access to ship repair services for our members.
This initiative will also provide industrial training and SIWES opportunities for boatbuilding technology cadets from the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron”
The Starz Shipping boss also assured that SOAN will encourage all shipowners including the Nigeria LNG Limited to make available berths on their fleet for cadets to acquire their required sea time and in this respect, “we will work closely with NIMASA’s National Seafafers Development Programme (NSDP) towards realizing its noble objective”
