The Customs Area Controller Tin Can Island Command, Nigeria Customs Service Comptroller Bashir Yusuf has harped on the for freight forwarding practitioners to build capacity on how to handle exportation of agricultural produce as part of effort sto diversify the nation's economy.
Comptroller Bashir gave made the call last week when the National President of Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Prince Olayiwola Shittu paid the command a working visit in Lagos.
The Area Controller charged Shittu on the need for ANLCA to train its members on exportation of agricultural products in order to get the needed foreign exchange.
He assured that he would be willing to be part of the resource persons during the sensitisation programme, stressing the need for Nigerians to boost exports.
He assured the clearing agents that importation of machineries meant for agricultural produce attracts zero duty in order to encourage Nigerians to go into agriculture and export.
The customs boss added that sensitisation of freight forwarders on export will further boost Nigeria's economy, urging members of the association to grab the opportunity to build capacity on goods produce and manufactured in Nigeria.
He charged encouraged members of ANLCA present to look inward in ensuring that transparency and integrity was upheld saying that revenue collection for the government cannot be achieved without the customs brokers.
The customs boss equally harped on the need for integrity among clearing agents at all times, even as he stressed that they remain one of the people sustaining the Nigerian economy in the face of prevailing economic recession.
He said "the integrity of the freight forwarding community would not improve until the integrity of the customs improves faster, but I know we would get there"
He also described the National President of the association as an asset to Nigeria, considering numerous outstanding paper presentation at international levels.
