The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) has advised the Nigerian government both at Federal, State and Local Government to collaborate with the residents of Apapa area of Lagos State in order to save the people from the impending danger of explosion due to tank farm constructions.
In a press release obtained by Shipping Position Daily last week, Senior Manager, Operations and Programmes of Bible Society Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Sanusi advised the Federal government to relocate all the tank farms in Apapa, saying that they are the major cause of the perennial traffic situation on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and the Ijora-Apapa road.
He said the state of Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and the Ijora-Apapa road which are in deplorable conditions and not passable is calling for urgent attention of the Federal government.
“A lot of accidents have happened like falling of containers on commercial buses or private car killing innocent souls, blocking of the two major roads by trucks and tankers making it impossible for Apapa bound vehicles to move”
“This also affects the human health, the time that would have been used for productive activities and men of the underworld robbing at night”
“Apart from the dangers these roads pose to human lives, the economic implications are enormous. The importers and exporters find it very difficult to bring their containers in and out of Apapa”
“In 2016, the Apapa Customs Command generated over N299.9 billion while the revenue generated daily by Tin Can Island Customs Command is N1 Billion. This is expected because the access roads is where huge income is generated for the government and it should not be in a horrible and terrible state that it is now” he said.
He stated further that the deplorable condition of the road was inherited from the past administration and these problems cannot be solved in one day.
Sanusi however advised the Federal government, State government and the Local government to see how railway services would be provided to transport goods in and out of Apapa in other to reduce the stress of the traffic; to provide adequate security for the road users and maintain discipline on the road and also give these roads a priority considering their strategic importance to the nation’s economy.
The Operation and Programmes Manager said that the citizens of Apapa and its environs should support the governments by clearing their drainage for free flow of the gutters in order to avoid flooding of Apapa during the raining season.
He recalled that Bible Society of Nigeria has published bible in some 24 local languages and two more to be published before next year and over 500 deaf and dumb has benefitted from this.
