Immediate Past President of Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Chief Basil Ogbuanu, last week appealed to the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to check the indiscriminate location of gas plants.
Ogbuanu made the appeal at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Benin.
He said that indiscriminate location of gas plants without recourse to safety of the environment and the people was a call for calamity.
He said that it was now common to see gas plants in densely populated areas in cities without recourse to the safety of the people.
“We must continue with our advocacy and work closely with DPR on this issue.
“The DPR should go round because a lot of things are going wrong in this industry, especially the sitting of plants in streets.
“We are not totally against it, but we are against the indiscriminate positioning of the facilities.
“If you go to some places and see the way some gas facilities are displayed, you will weep for this country because it is a time bomb waiting to explode.
He also urged the DPR to ensure that licences were not given to all applicants wishing to do the business
Ogbuanu, however, urged Nigerians to embrace the use of domestic gas as it was not only healthier, but more economical.
He said less than 10 million Nigerians out of the over 160 million people use gas and advised members of the association to explore the huge market.
“Less than 20 per cent of the people use this product in this country which means we need to do something to develop this business.
“There are opportunities in this business, we are more than 160 million in this country and I can tell you not up 10 million are using gas.
“It is you and I that will reach them by expanding our business by giving competitive prices,” he said.
