The Nigerian Police has said that it is still investigating last week's shooting of a truck owner by an officer attached to its RoRo division.
This is even as the Police also last week arrested the Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) at Tin Can Port; Alhaji Isiaka Olalere for allegedly organising his members to protest the shooting of a truck driver; Alhaji Dan Jos by a yet-to-be-identified Police officer.
Shipping Position Daily gathered last week that after Alhaji Olalere was arrested by mobile police men and taken to the Trinity Police Station, the police also arrested the officer who had shot the truck driver and three other officers who were involved in the sporadic shooting at the port.
All efforts to reach the arrested RTEAN Chairman at the weekend proved abortive as his phones were not connecting. But speaking with Shipping Position Daily, former Chairman of the union at Tin Can port, Comrade Sylvester Keshinro confirmed that the RTEAN Chairman has since been released.
Keshinro assured that the police has taken over the case and that they have arrested the police officers involved. He said the force AIG called the RTEAN chairman at the weekend again, probably to come and give his statement.
"When the incident happened, the chairman called DPO RoRo port and he was told to persuade the drivers protesting, but as he was doing that, the MOPOL came and arrested the Chairman, they took him to Trinity police station"
"They called the DPO RoRo who had asked him to do what he was doing, the Area Commander also came, he later asked them to release the chairman and nine other people he was arrested with"
"The matter is not dead, the officers were arrested and you can rest assured that if the truck driver is still at the hospital, they cannot be released just like that".
Meanwhile the truck owner is said to be recuperating presently at an un-named hospital and he is responding to treatment.
Comrade Keshinro assured that the Joint Council of Seaport Truckers (JCOST) is studying the situation, saying that there is nothing the union can do for now except the police fails to bring the officers to book.
When he was contacted by Shipping position Daily, spokesperson of the Maritime Police Command, Mr. Olatunde Sadiq said that the police is still carrying out its investigations.
"We are still investigating to know what actually happened. By Monday I will be able to give you more details and our official report" he said.
Recall that, trouble started at the Tin Can port last Thursday when a police officer shot the truck owner for daring to challenge him for urinating on his new tyres.
In a reprisal attack, the angry truck drivers pounced on the police officer who is yet to be identified and beat him up. He however escaped, leaving behind the cartridge of his AK 47 riffle.
