The Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, has commended the strength, resilience and invaluable contributions of women across the world as the global community marks International Women’s Day.
Adeyanju, who also serves as President of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), made the commendation in a statement issued to celebrate women and acknowledge their role in shaping societies and driving development.
The labour leader, who is also the immediate past President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), described women as the “mothers of all nations,” emphasizing that humanity itself owes its existence to women.
According to him, the world would have been “an empty space devoid of life” without the presence and sacrifices of women, noting that their contributions to family life, economic development and national progress remain indispensable.
Adeyanju, an Oyo prince and prominent figure in Nigeria’s labour movement, highlighted the vital roles women continue to play across various professions and sectors, urging them to remain steadfast and productive in their chosen careers.
He encouraged women to remain active and dedicated in their respective fields, stressing that dignity in labour is universal and that hard work continues to be the pathway to success and recognition.
The NLC Deputy President also pointed out that many of the world’s most successful women achieved greatness by refusing to be intimidated or suppressed in environments historically dominated by men.
He therefore urged women to continue asserting their rights and taking up leadership responsibilities, particularly in nation-building efforts and peace-building initiatives across the globe.
Adeyanju further described women as natural symbols of peace and stability, noting that their involvement in leadership and governance often contributes to social harmony and sustainable development.
While applauding women who are excelling in different professions, the labour leader encouraged them to continue serving as role models and to inspire younger generations through integrity, hard work and exemplary conduct.
He also expressed appreciation to women for their enduring contributions to society and their partnership with men in advancing national development.
Adeyanju concluded by praying that the sacrifices and efforts of women in building families, communities and nations would never go unrewarded, noting that diligence and commitment ultimately attract divine reward.
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually around the world to recognise the achievements of women and to promote gender equality across social, economic and political spheres.
