Years after the Lagos State Government introduced the controversial Wharf Landing Fee on cargoes landed and cleared at Lagos ports; the Apapa Local Government is set to also introduce another set of levies collectable on trucks operating within the port city of Apapa.
Our correspondent confirmed last week that, a collection agent has already being appointed to collect revenue from trucks loading at Tin Can Island port and Lagos Ports Complex; both in Apapa.
A document sighted by our correspondent last week, revealed that an agent called Azeez Abiodun and Sons Nigeria Limited has been contracted to collect the revenue from truck operators in the ports in Lagos.
The document revealed that the company got the approval on December 12th 2016 with a view of test running the exercise.
The engagement letter which was sighted by our correspondent is titled “RE-APPOINTMENT AS REVENUE COLLECTING AGENT’’.
The letter added that ‘’you are to assist the local government to collect revenue from heavy duty vehicles ;parking and loading within Apapa Wharf and Tin Can Island seaports’’
‘’This approval only allows you to test-run the revenue program for two weeks, effective from the date of collection of this approval letter.’’
‘’An official from the Local Government will also accompany you during the period of the test running’’
‘’You are to come up with adequate report of the test run after the exercise and equally to report to the office of the undersigned for the day to day briefing on the exercise’’. The letter was signed by Hunwi SS on behalf of the sole administrator.
When Shipping Position Daily correspondent visited the Local Government for further enquiries, some of the personnel approached declined comments, saying that the it was the Sole Administrator that would be in the best position to respond to the insinuations.
All efforts to get the Sole Administrator failed as he was said to be away from the office on three occasions.
