The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Maritime, Mr Fiara Yerima, on Tuesday in Lagos said the police and maritime stakeholders were collaborating to check waterways crimes in Nigeria.
Yerima told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the issue had gone beyond the security agencies tackling it alone.
He added that all who have business to do with water must be part of the battle by providing useful information.
“We are strategising with major stakeholders in maritime industry to check waterways criminals.
“We are aware of their threat, but we are on top of the situation. Our waterways are safe. There is no course for alarm.
“I sound a note of warning to criminals operating on our waterways that we are becoming more alert on security matters either on land, water and air.
“Security is top on the agenda of this administration, we are bracing up to their threat. People should go about their businesses,’’ Yerima assured.
The AIG also called on people living around riverine areas to cooperate with security agents by giving timely information on criminal activities in their communities.
Yerima advised them not to take security for granted, noting that any person could be a victim of crime if not check in time.
He said that any information given to the police would be treated confidentially.
