The Nigeria Police Force has announced the assumption of duty of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Okunade Ronke Nurat, as the 24th Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Maritime Police Command, Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos.
Her deployment followed a strategic posting by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime security and operational efficiency across Nigeria’s waterways.
AIG Okunade succeeds AIG Chinedu Oko, psc, who has officially retired from the Nigeria Police Force after years of service, handing over the leadership of the Maritime Police Command to his successor.
A native of Ogbomosho North Local Government Area of Oyo State, AIG Okunade holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Psychology from the University of Ibadan. She was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and trained at the Nigeria Police Academy Annex, Kaduna, before being commissioned as an ASP. She also completed her mandatory attachment at the Ondo State Police Command.
Over a career spanning more than three decades, AIG Okunade has served in various operational, administrative and investigative capacities across the country. Her experience includes duties at the Force Provost Office, Force Headquarters Annex, divisional and area command leadership within the Railway and Airport Commands, and assignments in several State Police Commands.
She also served in senior administrative roles at the FCID Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, and led specialised units including the Police Special Fraud Unit, Milverton, Lagos, and General Investigation at the FCID Annex as a Commissioner of Police.
Until her appointment as AIG Maritime, she made history as the first female Commandant and the first AIG to head the Police College, Kaduna, where she was credited with institutional repositioning and capacity development initiatives.
AIG Okunade has attended numerous professional courses, seminars and workshops within and outside Nigeria and is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). She is widely regarded for her professionalism, integrity and commitment to the core values of the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking during her assumption of duty, AIG Okunade pledged to work closely with officers, personnel and stakeholders of the Maritime Police Command to enhance maritime security, maintain public confidence and strengthen inter-agency cooperation. She assured of a renewed drive to take the Command to greater heights through discipline, professionalism and inclusive leadership.
The Maritime Police Command welcomed her appointment and called on sister agencies and maritime stakeholders to support her administration in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.
