Alleged Shooting Of Tanker Driver:

The Nigerian Navy has pledged to investigate and prosecute any of its personnel involved in acts capable of tarnishing the image and reputation of the service, such as the allegation that one of its personnel killed a tanker driver last Friday in Lagos.

The statement promised to punish the naval personnel alleged to have shot at a tanker driver at Ibafo/Trinity area of Apapa in the early hours of Friday, if found guilty.
The statement also disclosed that investigation into the matter was ongoing to ascertain the identity of the person if it was truly Nigerian Navy personnel.
"So far, it has not been authenticated that the suspect is a naval personnel, thus, any member of the public with useful information and identity of the suspect should contact naval authorities.
"The Nigerian Navy is therefore appealing to members of the public to exercise restraint and wait for the outcome of the ongoing investigation," it said.
It added that: "Nigerian Navy has a reputation of not covering offenders and this case will not be an exception, especially if the suspect is found to be Nigerian Navy personnel.
"He will be made to face the full weight of the law as the Nigerian Navy is also more concerned because it was alleged that a naval officer carried out the act," the statement said.
Shipping Position Daily recalls that one of the naval officers stationed to control traffic at the tank farms, allegedly shot and killed the tanker driver identified as 'Lekan' for allegedly refusing to give bribe to the officer.
Our correspondent was told on Friday that, the incident happened at about 3am, after the officer allegedly requested for N500 from the assistant driver who refused, saying that his driver was not around.

According to eye witnesses, the officer allegedly angrily dragged him out of the truck and shot the motor boy on the chest at close range. The bullet pierced out from his back and he died instantly.

Subsequently, at about 7am, the tanker drivers went on rampage and blocked the expressway on both sides with burning tires. Our correspondent noted that all the tank farms were shut down, while the traffic gridlock on the express lasted for several hours.

The rioting union members took the corpse of the driver afterwards to the Trinity Police Station chanting war songs.
