Even as next Monday has been fixed for elections into the national executive committee of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), serious horse trading is still on- going among the gladiators.
Our correspondents confirmed yesterday that, aspirants made last minute rush to beat the deadline of today (Wednesday).
Even though, the association’s electoral committee could not be reached to ascertain how many aspirants actually picked nomination forms, it was however confirmed that, the incumbent national president of the association; Prince Olayiwola Shittu is the sole candidate for the presidency.
Any aspirant in the election is expected to pay N600,000 for nomination form for the post of president, this is in addition to offsetting any outstanding indebtedness to the association.
Others are: N500,000 for Vice President, N400,000 for others intending national executive committee members. The post of Zonal Coordinators and Zonal Secretaries goes for N300,000 for nominations forms.
But, the disagreements over mode of election still continued yesterday, when some members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) maintained that conducting the election in the manner in which the electoral committee is trying to do is unacceptable.
Speaking at different times to our correspondents, the board’s coordinator; Alhaji Taiwo Mustapha maintained that the board is resolute in its position, based on the agreement at the last emergency meeting of the association’s national executive committee.
“Our position is that the election must hold on or before 16th of April, the election should also be by AGM and not by collegiate”.
He insisted that the way out of the current face off is for both parties to do the right thing and for all of us to be united; both the Board and the NECOM.
Also speaking with our correspondent, another member of the board; Chief Peter Obih also insisted that the elections must be by AGM and not by a collegiate.
Chief Obih explained that, no one envisaged that the lections of board members and that of the executives would be this close. The board election was conducted last December.
Making reference to the last emergency meeting where decisions to conduct the election was taken, the board member said; “For God’s sake, we held a meeting, we gave them three months so that things can be done right, they said No, they want to force us to have elections in two weeks, elections is not possible in two weeks. Remember, that’s why we wanted to extend their tenure, but they said NO.
He however explained that, contrary to insinuations, the board is not interested in running the association.
