The Public Relations Officer of the command; Mr. Emmanuel Ekpa who is the brain behind the innovation, told Shipping Position Daily yesterday that the effort of the Comptroller General of Customs gave rise to the innovation.
Ekpa said the site will help journalists and the general public to gather information about the command and the latest update about the Nigeria Customs Service in general.
The PRO explained that the customs in recent time, has been subjected to negative information from fraudsters about customs activities and added that, the first ever website created by a customs image maker will solve problems associated with misinformation by some miscreants.
He said issues like auctions of vehicles by customs which is rampant on social media will be addressed because such information is unhealthy to the service.
"I want to thank the CGC who has actually worked very hard as regard capacity building of customs, all the PROs were in Calabar for a three-day intensive workshop on ICT and we were groomed on the need for us to be abreast on the happenings around the world", he disclosed.
According to him, for an organisation to progress, the social media is significant and that the service is not excluded from it.
He said, in recent time people no longer wait for news, rather people go for the news and that "management has realised that there are some group of people that have pretended to be in the service and that also called for the training on social media"
He explained that many Nigerians have been affected by cyber crime, especially as regards auctions of vehicles, employment scam and other items for auctions but the blog will help to address such societal ills.
He expressed appreciation to the command’s controller; Comptroller Charles Edike for giving him the opportunity to attend the seminar which, according to him brought about the inspiration.
Ekpa also stated that the website will aid the fight against dubious internet fraudsters adding that war on the internet cannot be fought physically.
He said that the media and the public can assess the blog to get an update of the command even as he disclosed there are indications that the command may also use the facility to report revenue collected on a daily basis.
"The information for now is exclusive to the Apapa command, "Ekpa noted.
