Apapa Traffic: CILT Advocates Movement Of Cargoes By Water Barges

The Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics (CILT), Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to encourage movement of empty containers by barges in order to ease the gridlock on the roads leading to the nation's seaports in Lagos.

This call was made by the President of the Institute Alhaji Ibrahim Jibril at the 3rd CILT Industry Leadership Lecturer and Induction ceremony held in Lagos over the weekend.

The ceremony saw 145 person inducted into the Institute with 18 as chartered fellow, 70 as chartered members while 57 were inducted as members.

According to Jibril, moving empty containers through the nation's waterway would ease traffic gridlock along the roads leading to the nation's seaports.

His words, "Yes in the short measure, the road is the only accessible road to the port and the military are doing a marvelous job to allow people have access to the seaports and their offices and that is a good intervention and I think there are other ways which include using the waterways to bring in containers into the port especially using the waterways to bring in empty containers.

"This means government can create holding bay for empty containers at Badagry for easy movement of containers through badges ‎and this will stop trucks from coming to the ports to drop empty containers thereby adding to the traffic.

"I think we are making suggestions in that regard very soon something may happen and we are talking with some organisations to see that something happened in that line," he told journalists.

The CILT President also called for the drafting of a logistic policy to help grow the transport sector.
He believed the nation having a logistics policy wasn't out of place.

He said, "Having logistics policy is not out of place. We should be able to have a logistics policy because it will be more encompassing because we can't have logistics without Transportation i think it is high time we start looking at how we will draft logistics policy for the country," he said.

Induction ceremony was held under the chairmanship of Managing Director of Nigerian Railway Corporation, Engr.  Freeborn Okhiria.
