The Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents has said that there is need to abolish the age-long practice of apprenticeship in the freight forwarding in Nigeria, saying that this is archaic.
National President of ANLCA, Prince Olayiwola Shittu told Shipping Position Daily last week that corporate organizations as well as freight forwarding associations should encourage their staff and members to attend institutions accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) and learn theoretical aspects of the job.

National President of ANLCA, Prince Olayiwola Shittu told Shipping Position Daily last week that corporate organizations as well as freight forwarding associations should encourage their staff and members to attend institutions accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) and learn theoretical aspects of the job.
Shittu said that there are so many schools accredited by CRFFN where people can learn the theoretical aspect of freight forwarding so that it would be easier for them to handle the practical in a short while.
"A port where one person wants to go and do cargo examination in the port and five to six people are following him, and when you ask what they are going to do, they tell you they are apprentices", he observed.
"I was never an apprentice, what do you call apprentice? Are we learning carpentry? In this modern day that anybody can go to school and learn freight forwarding even online".
He said that whoever wants to learn the trade must join a company.
He assured that one of the reasons ANLCA has acquired a new national secretariat is for its hall to be transformed into a training centre, this according to him will be put at the disposal of the CRFFN.
"The reason is that even our leaders must be having regular training, it is not about you being elected for popularity sake, what is your knowledge base? And what do you know about what is happening abroad?"
He said that the outcome of its recent training in Korea will be downloaded to the chapter leaders who will in turn transfer to their members.
"We have the mailing list of our members, those who have e-mail will be given the materials" he assured.
