... As Stevedoring Companies Admits Dockworkers Are Poorly Treated

President of the‎ National Association of Stevedoring Companies, Mr. Bolaji Sunmola has said that it is aware that some dockworkers were not being treated well in terms of kitting and adequate welfare by some of her members.

Sunmola in an exclusive chat with Shipping Position Daily yesterday said that there are some bad eggs among stevedoring companies who are deliberately giving the ones a bad name by not taking proper care of dockworkers and stevedores.

He however argued that the number of stevedoring companies keeping up to international standards supersedes those that were not up to standard. ‎

"We have issues that have been raised that dockworkers are not kitted, but kitting is relative‎ in terms of acceptance, some companies are doing it 100% and so well, but I will say that there are some bad people who are giving the whole stevedore members some bad face, but they are just a minority"

"There are few of them not keeping up to the standard, but many actually are keeping up to the standard" Sunmola said that there are defaulters among the companies in terms of workers salaries. ‎
"I don't think there is any salary more than the welfare of somebody being taken care of, this is an industry that we have people not paying for services rendered for nine months, so what do you expect, people should get their salary as at when due" ‎

"There is no better salary than for people to receive their salaries as at when due, but when frivolous excuses are put forward for delaying and deferring payment, then we would have this dis-equilibrium and welfare of the workers at stake" he said.
