Automobile dealers have described the last Christmas and New Year sales of used and new vehicles in Lagos State as a huge disappointment even as they revealed that the January sales has recorded massive boost.
Some of the dealers who spoke to Shipping Position Daily last week revealed that most buyers prefer to buy their preferred brands in the New Year due to the high cost of vehicles during the festive period.
According to them, the prices of vehicles were a bit high in the last quarter of 2012 compared to what is obtainable in January, 2013.
Chairman Freedom Park Motor Dealers’ Association;, Mr. Moses Adebusuyi explained that the few weeks so far spent in 2013 have witnessed massive sales when compared to the whole of the festive season in 2012.
Giving an insight on the soaring sales figures, the chairman noted that customers are aware that most dealers would inflate the prices of vehicles at stock for last year due to the high cost of items in festive period.
According to him, sales of vehicles at the freedom park which is situated at the Mile 2 axis of Apapa Oshodi expressway has aided patronage at the park as buyers are invariable coming to bargain for their preferred brands.
He also rated the performance of sales in park in January to be about 75 % even as he stressed that the month of January is barely two weeks old.
On his part, Mr.Ekene Obeleagu also a dealer in Lagos believed that the sudden boost in the sales of vehicles in some auto shops and market was based on the mindset of buyers in the country.
Obeleagu also predicted that importation of vehicles will soar this year as demand for vehicles is relatively on the increase, compared to the sales of last year.
He also agreed with the chairman over the percentage increase in sales even as he noted that expectations are very high following the January sales.
