Car Imports Down 35 Percent Over First 10 Months of 2015 In Algeria

Algeria's car import bill totalled US$2.86 billion over the first ten months of 2015, against US$4.4 billion during the same period in 2014, down 35.5%, said last week Tuesday the Algerian Customs' National Centre of Data Processing and Statistics (CNIS).

In terms of quantity, Algeria imported 240,901 vehicle against 339,771 during the same period of reference, down by 29.1%, said the CNIS.

The figures provided by the CNIS show a general downward trend, especially for French and German cars, which recorded a decline in both value and quantity, except commercial vehicles, which increased during the same period of reference.

The drop in car imports started in 2014 following the Government's decision to regulate the market, which had been characterised by deep dysfunctions and illegal practices over the past years, according to a recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Trade.

The Government has committed to regulating the market and rationalising car imports through different measures.

In 2014, car import bill hit US$ 6.34 billion against US$ 7.33 billion in 2013 (-13.56%), while in terms of quantity Algeria imported 439,637 cars in 2014 against 554,263 in 2013 (-20.68%), said CNIS.
