Cargo Throughput Soars At Ports, Says NPA

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) says that cargo throughput at the ports increased by 0.042 per cent in 2013.
Throughput is the total number of cargo that passed through the ports, either coming or going.
A statement issued by the NPA Public Affairs Department on Wednesday, added that cargo throughput of 76,886,997 million metric tonnes (mt) was handled at all Nigerian Ports in 2013.
The NPA, however, said that the figure excluded cargo handled by crude oil terminals.

According to the NPA, the figure indicated an increase of 0.042.6 per cent over the 2012 figure of 76,855,754 metric tonnes.
Further breakdown of the throughput revealed that the container traffic amounted to 1,010,836 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs), a growth of 15.2 per cent over the 2012 full year figure of 877,737TEUs.
It said a total of 291,824 units of vehicles were handled in the period under review, an increase of 8.9 per cent over the 2012 full year figure of 268,026 units.
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) shipment handled in the period under review amounted to 19,341,663 metric tonnes, a drop of 12.7 per cent from 22,146,908 metric tonnes of 2012 full year figure.
The NPA also said that the refined petroleum shipment handled was 19,416,043mts, an increase of 9.5 per cent over 2012 full year figure of 17,730,727 metric tonnes.
Dry bulk cargo handled at the ports in the year under review amounted to 9,537,447 metric tonnes, a decline of 6.5 per cent from 2012 full year figure of 10,205,339 metric tonnes.
The NPA also said that general cargo handled at the ports in year 2013 was 11,964,978 metric tonnes, indicating a drop of 5.8 per cent from the 2012 full year figure of 12,702,826 metric tonnes.
