The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service is expected to meet with the Minister of Finance in Benin Republic as part of efforts to boost bilateral trade and trade facilitation.
Shipping Position Daily gathered that, apparently determined to stem the tide of smuggling of products into the country, the Customs boss will also hold close door meeting with the Comptroller General of the Beninoise customs on need to cooperate and nip smuggling activities in the bud.
An insider sources confirmed to our correspondent over the weekend that Customs of Benin Republic no longer want to assist their Nigerian counterparts in boosting trade facilitation and revenue collection.
Shipping Position Daily learnt that the initial arrangement that was put in place by the immediate past Customs CGH; Dikko Abdullahi to partner with Benin Customs has been described as unfavourable to them, hence the decision to circumvent it and frustrate Nigerian customs at the border.
Our source who is a senior officer at the Seme Command, said the Command has reported the non-compliance of the Francophone country to the Customs boss, especially in the area of collection of correct duty on trans-border cargoes.
“This is why the CGC is visiting Benin Republic to meet their officials”, he confirmed.
