Customs Seize 963kg Of Marijuana, Destroy Poultry Products

The Oyo/Osun Custom Area Command yesterday seized 107 sacks containing 963kg of marijuana at Igo-Ora area of Oyo State. A Ford E.250 with Lagos number plate XW 193 GGE was used to transport the substance.
The Command’s Area Controller, Richard Oteri told journalists in Ibadan that apart from the seizure that was made by a team of crack team led by DSC Olaogun, 10,000 cartons of poultry products loaded in three vehicles were also seized on June 6, 2014 along Agbegi/Olodi axis in Osun State. The products were destroyed on Monday.

He said, “The vigilant team trailed the bus in Igbo-Ora around 4.30am and seized the bus ferrying the marijuana.
“We are yet to ascertain where the vehicle was coming from but we suspect that it could have come from one of the neighbouring countries that border Oyo State. The driver and other occupants fled when they realised that they could not out-pace our team, leaving the bus.
“We have the particulars of the bus and soon, the owner will be apprehended. They cannot be on the run for too long.”
The sacks of marijuana were handed over to the Oyo State Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mrs Omolade Faboyede, who promised to carry out further investigation that will lead to the arrest of those who are responsible for the importation of the substance into the state.
“We have a lead already and based on that, we can work quickly and trace the owner of the vehicle and subsequently, those responsible for the substance importation,” she said.
Oteri said the relationship between Customs and other relevant agencies had resulted in the reduction of smuggling activities in the command, adding that his command had built on the past successes and contributed to the development of the nation’s economy.
