Dockworkers Demand Standing Committee To Monitor Tank Farms, Port Access Roads

Dockworkers under the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have called on the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government to create a standing committee that will monitor activities at tank farms along Ibafon axis of Apapa as well as major access into the seaports.
Dockworkers Branch President of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju told Shipping Position Daily last week in Lagos that the union as well as the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has made several calls on the government in this regard.

Dockworkers Branch President of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju told Shipping Position Daily last week in Lagos that the union as well as the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has made several calls on the government in this regard.
It would be recalled that Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode recently constituted a task force to monitor tank farm activities, arrest articulated trucks and clear port access roads of vehicular traffic.
But Adeyanju alleged that the task force only shows up whenever there is crisis on the roads and thereafter they go back to base. He called for a standing committee that will be permanent on the access road.
 "It is not until people begin to die before government will know what to do about the area. Let's hope the task force by the Lagos State Government will come and do something, they only come when there is a problem, when they leave the problem continues"
 "There should be a standing committee. The Governor of Lagos State was here, he saw things and everybody was happy, after one week, the whole situation has come back to square one.‎ We are not happy with the trend of things"
"The union is not relenting in their effort including NUPENG, we have written series of protest letters" Adeyanju stated.
‎He recalled that a committee was put in place in form of a task force set up by the Ministry of Transport, the Nigerian Port Authority and other stakeholders, but this has equally failed to yield any results.
"If you set up a committee and the committee is not performing, they should be dissolved" he advised.
