Newly appointed director general of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr Temisanye Omatseye last weekend declared that he has sufficient academic and industry perquisites to occupy the exalt position as the chief executive of the nation’s maritime safety and administration agency.
Omatseye stressed this at the official handing over which was to have seen his predecessor, Dr Ade Dosunmu officially handing over to him. However, Dr Dosunmu was conspicuously absent. No reason was given for his absence.
The agency’s executive director, Mr Ishaku Shekarau however stood-in for the former chief executive officer.
But, apparently reacting to concerns expressed by stakeholders that the agency has always had chief executives who have no requisite qualifications, the new NIMASA boss told journalists that he came from a family of ship owners and that his father is a ship owner. “My father used shipping to train me, I am shipping by birth”, he declared.
He added that, in addition to this, he has silently fought the course of indigenous ship owners, stressing specifically that he played a very significant role in the passage of the Cabotage Act. “I was part of the team that worked in the background to get the Cabotage Act passed. I came here to move NIMASA from phase one to phase two”, he told the gathering which also included top management of the agency.
Further justifying his qualification for the job Omatseye stressed “If I am not qualified, I won’t be here. I am an operator; I have supply vessels in Port Harcourt, I know the problem of the industry”, he added.
He new director general who was flanked by his executive directors seized the opportunity of the handing over to reiterate that the new management would work assiduously to with stakeholders including indigenous ship owners, labour and sister agencies to achieve the desired results.
