A commissioner in Oyo State, Mr Adebayo Olagbenro has advised the Federal Government to establish more dry ports to decongest the seaports in the country.
Olagbenro who is Oyo State Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Cooperatives, made the call in Ibadan during an interview with newsmen.
“Dry ports can help in cargo transshipment where goods can be exported directly from and imported directly without experiencing the hassles involved at seaports,’’ he said.
He said that the dry ports had the capacity to create jobs and enhance the economic development of host communities.
The commissioner commended the Federal Government for establishing the Ibadan dry port.
According to him, when completed, the port will help to boost the revenue generation capacity of Oyo State.
“The location of these facilities relieves competition for storage and customs space at the seaport thereby can directly help to decongest our ports.
“The Ibadan dry port is almost completed and will soon be operational; so we can witness this theory first-hand.
“ I can assure you that Oyo state has been supportive because of the enormous benefit the project will derive for the state,’’' he said.
Olagbenro said that on completion, the Ibadan port would render services like “storage and goods consolidation, cargo export and import as well as customs clearance services”.
“'You know initially at the conception stage, the project was actually going to be a container depot which is not an attractive commercial concept to investors.
“After consultations, the government upgraded it to a port which, on completion, will serve as a standard operational base for port operators and agencies,’’ he said.
