The Police on Friday arraigned a 34-year-old freight forwarder, Benjamin Nzere, before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining N2.5 million by false pretences.
Nzere, who is of no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining money by false pretences and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Romanus Unuigbe, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Sept. 23 at Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos.
He said that Nzere obtained N2.5 million from the complainant, Mr Christopher Ajah, giving him the assurance that his imported goods would be cleared in a week or few days more.
Unuigbe said that after Nzere received the money from the complainant, he converted the money into his personal use and kept giving excuses until the complainant reported the matter to the police.
According to the prosecutor, Nzere’s action contravened sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law Cap.17, Vol.3 Laws of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adewale Ojo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
He also ordered that the sureties addresses be verified by the prosecutor and they should provide evidence of gainful employment.
The Magistrate adjourned the case until Jan. 19, 2018 for mention.
