Fresh Explosions Rock Hamburg Port After Massive Fire

Fresh explosions were reported early Wednesday at the Port of Hamburg, just hours after a massive fire that burned for over 40 hours was declared under control.

The blasts occurred around 4 a.m. (0200 GMT), igniting two containers which were extinguished from a safe distance using water cannons. No injuries were reported in the latest incident.

According to a Hamburg Fire Brigade spokesman, water curtains were deployed to prevent the fire from spreading further.

About 30 firefighters remained on site Wednesday morning, working to uncover embers and open containers to fully extinguish the blaze.

Authorities say investigations into the cause of the fire will only begin once all hotspots are extinguished, with recovery operations expected to last throughout the day.

The original blaze, which erupted Monday afternoon in the Veddel district southeast of Hamburg’s city centre, injured six people.

One woman initially in critical condition is now stable, police said.

Hamburg is home to one of Europe’s busiest ports.
