On 21st July, the Italian Shipping company Grimaldi Group officially named its latest pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), Grande Shanghai, at Haimen, China. The vessel is the first of ten PCTCs ordered by the company from China Merchants Industry Haimen.
Grande Shanghai has a length of 220 metres, a width of 38 metres, and a gross tonnage of 93,145. Designed by the naval architecture firm Knud E. Hansen of Denmark, the new-build vessel features 14 decks and a loading capacity of 9,000 CEUs. It is capable of transporting both electric and conventionally powered vehicles. The vessel has received an “Ammonia Ready” certificate from RINA, enabling it to be converted to use ammonia as a marine fuel in the future.
The car carrier is equipped with green technologies including mega lithium batteries, solar panels, shore power connectivity, air lubrication systems, and advanced propulsion with optimized hull design. These innovative technologies are expected to reduce fuel consumption by 50% compared to the earlier-generation car carrier.
