The South-South Youth Peace Movement (SSYPM) in Bayelsa has called on youth in the region to support the Federal Government in its efforts to curb pipeline vandalism.
The Group’s Secretary, Mr Michael Nochis, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa on Tuesday that protecting oil pipeline would engender more development for the people.
The group described pipeline vandalism as a threat to the nation’s economy.
He noted that to sustain development in the South-South geo-political zone all hands must be on deck.
“I urge the youths not to take the laws into their hands; the oil is for the entire nation and so long as Nigeria remains one, we must work together for the betterment of all of us.
“Our people, the youth in the Niger-Delta have so far enjoyed benefits of the amnesty programme, so, let us not destroy what belong to us.
“Let us say no to oil pipeline vandalism, protect the source of our economy, and protect the environment because when there is oil spill, lives will be at risk, farm land will be damaged and our rivers will also be polluted.
“The Community leaders, especially parents, should call their children to order to avoid incurring more difficulties to the economy; we must work with the security agencies by giving information.
“We must protect our land and those who think that giving information to assist the government in tracking down the criminals is bad are themselves part of the perpetrators,“ Nochis said.
