Foremost maritime lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr Mike Igbokwe has been appointed as the regional representative for Africa by International Bar Association (IBA) on Transport and Maritime Law for a two- year period starting from 2016.
This was contained in a statement sent to Shipping Position Daily, last week in Lagos, by the appointee.
According to the statement, the announcement of his appointment was made by Mr. Ricardo Rozas, the Committee’s Chairman at the Committee’s dinner had at the Aux Gazalles, Vienna, Austria on 7th October,2015.
It reads:"by virtue of the appointment, I would become one of the Committee’s Officers from 2016 "
"The Maritime and Transport Law Committee is one of the Committees under the Maritime and Aviation Section of the Legal Practice Division of the IBA, ‘the global voice of the legal profession".
As noted on the IBA’s website, ‘through the various committees of the divisions, the IBA enables an interchange of information and views among its members as to laws, practices and professional responsibilities relating to the practice of business law around the globe.
'’ The Committee organizes ‘specialist conferences yearly where members connect to discuss the latest issues within their field as well as making international contacts’'.
"It also publishes regular news and articles for its members and may undertake various projects of relevance to its practice area."
Responding,Igbokwe said that the appointment was in recognition of the enormous contributions to maritime development as regards maritime law.
" I believe that the appointment is in recognition of my humble contribution to the development of the maritime law work of the Committee in particular and IBA in general"
"It is a honour done to Nigeria and Africa as a whole which I intend to uphold and use to promote the ideals and aims of the Committee and IBA in Nigeria and Africa”, the statement concluded.
