The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command, on Wednesday, said it has generated about N63 billion as revenue between January and June this year.
The Acting Customs Area Controller of the command, Deputy Comptroller Usman Umar-Adamu, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the command’s mid-year performance at its headquarters in Kano.
Umar-Adamu said the revenue surpassed the N58.3 billion generated during the corresponding period of 2025.
The acting area controller said the command also arrested 22 suspects and made seizures worth a Duty Paid Value of N1.7 billion.
He said the operations leading to the interceptions were intelligence-driven, noting that the command had also developed a real-time dashboard to monitor and evaluate revenue generation.
“The generated revenue represents a growth of about 7.4 per cent, in spite of the decline in cargo throughput.
“Notably, the Kano Free Trade Zone generated over N26 billion during the first half of 2026. This exceeded the total revenue generated by the Zone from January to December 2025 by approximately N4 billion.
“The command’s initiatives also led to the recovery of about N3 billion from the abuse of transit procedures during the period under review,” he said.
The acting area controller added: “The command intensified its enforcement activities through intelligence-driven operations and effective inter-agency collaboration.
“This is in line with the service’s mandate of protecting the nation’s economy and preventing the importation of controlled, prohibited and restricted goods.
“These efforts resulted in 13 categories of notable detentions and seizures, which include unregistered pharmaceuticals, four units of air pistols imported, and endangered wildlife animals including elephant tusks.
“Others include over 2,000 pieces of 25-litre kegs of foreign refined packaged vegetable oil, foreign spaghetti and macaroni pasta, foreign parboiled rice in 50kg bags, and counterfeit packaging material for agrochemicals and insecticides.”
Umar-Adamu added that also seized were fourteen 40ft transit containers involving diversion and abuse of transit procedures, smuggled vehicles and truck heads, an RX drone camera with GPS without an End User Certificate, as well as military gear and accoutrements.
He revealed that 22 suspects were arrested in connection with the detentions and seizures.
“Some have been handed over to the relevant security and regulatory agencies for further investigation, while others are on administrative bail.
“Therefore, the total detentions and seizures recorded during the period under review amounted to a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N1.7 billion.
“Additionally, the Command recorded major interceptions at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport involving the cross-border movement of undeclared foreign currencies, in violation of the Anti-Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022,” Umar-Adamu said.
According to him, the intercepted undeclared cash and other negotiable instruments consisted of 568,100 United States Dollars, 134,256 Saudi Riyals, 28 Chinese Yuan, 20 Ghana Cedis, and 35 kilograms of silver bars worth N175 million, underscoring the command’s unwavering commitment to combating illicit financial flows and safeguarding Nigeria’s financial system.
He said: “The successes recorded in the first half of 2026 demonstrate the unwavering commitment, professionalism and resilience of the command’s officers and men.
“These achievements were made possible through the strategic leadership, reforms and innovations of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and his Management Team.
“We sincerely appreciate their commitment and the direction provided in the discharge of our responsibilities,” the Area Controller, Umar-Adamu, said.
