The Lagos State Government, Sunday, said that the installation of modern concrete pontoons in selected jetties across the state, is in progress, as part of efforts to upgrade waterways infrastructure.
Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr Dayo Alebiosu, said that the installation will improve commuter’s experiences under the 410 million Euros Omi Eko Project.
In a statement to newsmen on Sunday, he described the installation as being a major step in modernising water transport, and enhancing public confidence in boat travels.
According to him, the concrete floating pontoons which function as flexible docking platforms, were already being mounted at Agboyi Ketu in Kosofe, Ijegun Egba in Amuwo Odofin, and Bayeku in Ikorodu.
He said that additional sites will be included across the state.
Alebiosu hinted that similar installations will be done at Ebute Ero on Lagos Island, Ijede in Ikorodu, Apa in Badagry, Mile 2 in Amuwo Odofin, Mowo in Ojo, as well as other jetties identified for infrastructure upgrades.
“These pontoons are crafted from rigid concrete blocks designed to float and withstand wave pressure, while providing stability.
“The platforms eliminate the fear passengers feel when boarding from shaky wooden structures,” he said.
The commissioner noted that the innovation creates a flat and stable surface, which feels like boarding from solid ground, adding that the modular pontoons can also serve as temporary bridges during flooding or erosion.
According to him, the ongoing upgrades include a six-sided pontoon model that offers 360-degree docking capacity and crowd movement, noting that Falomo Jetty currently operates a partial installation with a two-sided configuration.
He said that the project is jointly funded by the French Development Agency, European Investment Bank and the European Union.
“This is more than infrastructure; it is about transforming how Lagosians move, work and connect.
“We are building a safe, sustainable and competitive waterways network that complements our roads and rail,” he said
The pontoon initiative is a major component of the 410 million Euros Omi Eko Project, designed to modernise Lagos’ water transport system.
The project, is scheduled for completion between 2024 and 2030, and will deliver 78 electric ferries, channelise 15 waterways, expand 25 terminals and integrate Cowry Card payment for ferries, buses and the Lagos Metro network.
