There are indications that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) may begin a crackdown on Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) who parkindiscriminately along the Apapa Oshodi expressway, especially those who have currently taken over a portion of the Toyota Bus-Stop area of the ever-busy expressway, depriving other road users access to the road.
Shipping Position Daily gathered from a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of LASTMA and signed by its spokesperson, Bola Ajao, that the agency is ready to deploy more of its officers to the high traffic area which has been generating a lot of questions. The officers will also be deployed to the Ibru and Ibafon areas of Apapa, Lagos.
When our correspondent spoke with one of the tanker drivers, Ugochi Daniels, he claimed that the drivers were lined up on the expressway all in their bid to receive loading tickets from MRS Oil before moving down to the depot.
?According to him, the parking area could no longer contain the trucks because they were all sent packing from the Tin Can Island port where they usually stay and wait for loading.
?Also speaking with Shipping Position Daily at the MRS tank farm at Tin Can Port, a PTD union leaders, Comrade Sunday Enahoro said that reasons the trucks were lined along the expressway was as a result of no product at the tank farm. Our correspondent noted also that the ongoing rehabilitation of the depots has made it difficult for the trucks to stay within the terminal.
Enahoro however said that it is unfortunate that? the tanker drivers have refused to conduct themselves properly whenever they are asked to get their loading teller.
As part of efforts to ensure that road users especially commuters and motorists experience smooth ride within Lagos State, the newly appointed General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Bashir Braimah had recently unveiled his plan to meet and engage all stakeholders in the management and control of traffic in the state.
He sought the cooperation and support of transport unions in tackling the menace of growing traffic disorder in the state.
The new LASTMA boss recently embarked on an assessment tour of traffic management in the state and lamented the nonchalant attitude of truck drivers plying the Apapa-Oshodi expressway.
At the MRS Truck Staging Area along Oshodi Apapa expressway, petroleum tankers were indiscriminately parked on the dual carriage way with the excuse of waiting to collect fuel loading teller, leading to total denial of other road users access to the road.
He urged them to reciprocate the state governments' kind gesture on non-punitive enforcement policy by obeying state traffic laws.
