The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has reiterated the enforcement of its long-standing ban on night-time travel across Lagos inland waterways, warning residents and visitors against attempting water transportation after sunset, particularly ahead of the Ilashe Beach concert scheduled for Sunday, January 11, 2026.
The reminder comes amid expected high movement on the waterways following the planned concert by Fuji musician, Alhaji Sule Alao Malaika, which is expected to attract a large crowd of fun seekers travelling to Ilashe Beach by boat. LASWA stressed that all boat operations, whether commercial or private, are permitted strictly during daylight hours, noting that the night travel restriction remains in full force.
According to the authority, the ban on night voyages is driven by persistent safety concerns, including poor visibility, navigational hazards, and the increased risk of accidents on the waterways after sunset. LASWA maintained that the restriction is aimed at preventing avoidable mishaps and safeguarding lives and property across the state’s inland water routes.
The agency urged intending travellers to plan their movements adequately, arrive at their destinations early, and avoid any attempt to travel by water after dark. It further warned boat operators to strictly comply with approved operating hours and adhere to all safety regulations, including ensuring that passengers wear life jackets at all times while on board.
LASWA also disclosed that joint enforcement patrols will be carried out by its officials in collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and other safety and security agencies to ensure compliance with the night travel ban. The authority cautioned that violators, including both operators and passengers who flout the restriction, will be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with existing laws.
The reminder forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to reduce incidents of boat accidents and improve safety standards on the waterways, particularly during periods of increased social and recreational activities.
LASWA reiterated that safety on Lagos waterways is a shared responsibility, calling on the public to cooperate with regulatory authorities and comply with established guidelines to avoid unnecessary risks.
The authority assured residents and visitors that it will continue to regulate water transportation activities within the state to promote orderliness, safety, and efficiency across the inland waterways.
