The Managing Director of GMT Shipping, Mr. Tim Maguire, has paid a courtesy visit to the President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, at the Union’s National Secretariat on Osho Drive, Olodi Apapa, Lagos.

Maguire, a long-standing ally of the Union and a key player in Nigeria’s shipping sector, congratulated Comrade Bunu on his recent election victory and pledged GMT’s continued support for his administration. He described Bunu as a refined labour leader and astute maritime expert, whose track record and integrity have stood the test of time.

“We at GMT have enjoyed a productive and respectful relationship with MWUN over the years, and we are confident that under Comrade Bunu’s leadership, this bond will grow even stronger. He is a gentleman of proven integrity and commitment to the welfare of maritime workers,” Maguire stated during the visit.

In his response, Comrade Bunu expressed appreciation for the MD’s visit and goodwill. He emphasized that MWUN values mutual respect and constructive engagement with employers, particularly those who uphold workers’ rights and welfare.

“The Union will always align with companies that treat workers fairly. However, where workers are treated with disregard or injustice, the Union will not hesitate to act in their defence,” Bunu said.

He reiterated that while MWUN remains committed to promoting industrial harmony, it will not tolerate any attempt to undermine workers’ welfare. “Our members are trained to deliver excellence in their duties, and we expect employers to reciprocate with fair treatment and conducive working conditions. Erring workers will also be disciplined in line with the Union’s values,” he added.

The visit was a reaffirmation of GMT’s cordial relationship with MWUN and a shared commitment to advancing industrial peace and productivity in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
